I'm Nicky Ebbage (they/them), a queer photographer based in Bristol, who specialises in portraits, weddings and events. My images tend to have a natural, documentary-like quality to them, and I try to make my practice as inclusive and affordable as possible. It's also really important to me that my clients feel comfortable during our sessions. Despite my name, I’m not interested in just taking photos; I’m interested in you, and in creating images that can really represent you as you are.
As a transgender photographer, I'm particularly invested in representing the queer/LGBTQ community in my work; I really want to ensure that I provide members of that community with a safe space in which they can have their photos taken. That being said, I love working with anyone and everyone! Human identity is so rich and varied and, for me, all those differences make photography even more exciting!
Why did you choose the name 'Nicky Takes Photos'?
Well, for a start, I'm very literal! But also,"Nicky Ebbage Photography" sounds way too formal for my liking and, honestly? A bit boring! Lastly, I’m not particularly interested in creating a Serious Photography Brand™. I mostly just want to work with like-minded people, and enjoy what I do.
What do you mean by affordable photography?
The world is pretty expensive these days, and I think that sucks. While I need to make a living out of my work, I run standard and reduced rate pricing structures so that those on low-income can still afford professional, empowering photographs. Most importantly: no one is turned away for lack of funds.
Do you photograph anything other than weddings, portraits and events?
Yes! I also specialise in live performance photography, including gigs, theatre, drag and more! Currently I'm one of the house photographers at St George's Bristol. My work incorporates fashion photography in and about Bristol as well. To find out more about these aspects of my work, please click here.
"Nicky took the time to reassure me and make me feel completely at ease. They repeatedly asked for my input, while finding ways to bring their own unique touch to the final pictures.
It goes without saying that I am thrilled with the results: I feel Nicky's headshots really captured my character, and I can't wait to display them."
