GENERAL SUBMISSIONS FOR THIS PROJECT ARE NOW CLOSED

HOWEVER!

I am still interested in hearing from anyone who is currently underrepresented in the submissions. This includes BAME individuals, LGBTQ folks, disabled folks, anyone experiencing homelessness, and anyone over the age of 60.

If you belong to one of those groups and have a unique story to tell, you can get in touch with me here!

What is Through Your Window?

Hi there, my name is Nicky and I’m a photographer based in Bristol. ‘Through Your Window’ is a collection of self-isolation stories, told through both the written word and my camera. The project aims to document life in Bristol during the covid-19 pandemic.

How does it work?

You tell me your story, and I (safely!) take your photo! Using the form below tell me about how covid-19 has impacted your life, in as much or as little detail as you like. Any kind of story goes, whether it’s long or short, whether it’s silly, sad or something else entirely. Once you’ve submitted the story and I’ve read it through, I’ll contact you about having your photograph taken. We’ll agree a date and time, and then I will plan a route for my daily exercise walk which includes your home. I'll stop off and take a quick photo of you from outside – you can be in your doorway, your window, or anywhere else around your home that allows us to comply with distancing rules. I will call, text or message you when I arrive, so that we don’t need to get physically close.

Who can take part?

At the moment I am only accepting submissions from people living in BS1, BS2, BS3, BS6, Clifton and Totterdown, as these are the places I can walk to easily. I will also ask for your postcode when you submit, so I can properly judge whether I can walk to your home safely. Beyond that, anyone over 18 can participate! I’m calling these stories “self-isolation stories,” but in reality I’m looking to hear about as many experiences as possible – whether you’re in isolation, or you’re social distancing, or you’re a key worker who has to go out every day. Any kind of story goes, but I’m particularly interested in stories that are Bristol specific, or that aren’t widely represented in the media right now.

NB. While I am not accepting submissions from under 18s at this time, families may apply as a group if they wish!

What will happen with my story and the photograph?

I will post them to my website, and my instagram and facebook feeds. I also like the idea of exhibiting the work somewhere or creating a photobook once this is all over.

Why this project?

When I stood at my window the other night and clapped for the NHS with the rest of my street, I felt such a strong sense of community and solidarity. It was a real morale boost, and it inspired me to think about other ways to bring people together. I really hope that sharing stories in this way can help bring about a sense of community – but if not, perhaps it might just bring someone a smile.

Also, let’s be honest, it’s nice to have a project when you’ve not got much else on! ;)
